The bodies of two Ugandan Nationals killed while assaulting Rwanda National police were handed over to Uganda on Tuesday 12 November 12, 2019 at the border in a ceremony attended by authorities on both sides.
The Rwandan team, led by the Mayor of Nyagatare district David Claudian Mushabe, handed over the bodies of Job Ebindishanga and John Bosco Tuheirwe to Rukiga district officials led by Prikeria Muhindo Mwiine, the Rukiga Resident District Commissioner (RDC).
The handover took place at Buziba border post and officials from both sides signed documents confirming receipt of the bodies.
During the handover, the Mayor of Nyagatare district cautioned residents of the border districts from using illegal entry points and smuggling banned substances into Rwanda.
The mayor of Nyagatare said that on November 10,2019 the group entered into Rwanda through a porous entry in Tabagwe sector carrying tobacco and other smuggled materials and fought the police when they were stopped, hence forcing police to react in self-defense.
On the other hand, Rukiga RDC appreciated the way the bodies were preserved and being in good condition and strongly condemned those conducting smuggling activities and reiterated how it’s unacceptable to both countries. The RDC emphasized on sensitization against smuggling along the border stretch communities and condemned what she called ‘’the act of shooting and killing other than using normal legal procedures’’.
The delegation from Uganda was led by Rukiga RDC Muhinda Prokeria, RPC Kigezi region senior superintendent SSerunjoji, DPC Rukiga Distric Assistant superintendent Okumu and the relatives of the deceased.
