How Rwanda’s recognition of national heroes has inspired youth

After the selfless young RPF-Inkotanyi soldiers halted the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Rwandans united to commemorate Heroes Day on every February 1.

Historically, this celebration has been a significant occasion to pay tribute to the brave deeds that contributed to the growth and protection of the nation.

Even today, this occasion is observed to encourage young Rwandans adopting the values of national heroes, and strive to sustain a dignified country and society for generations to come.

A particular emphasis is placed on the youth, who represent the leaders of tomorrow. They benefit from a government led by President Paul Kagame that prioritizes them in implementations of various programs to nurture their skills in an environment conducive to creativity and innovation.

The year 2024 holds special significance, marking the 30th anniversary since the selfless Inkotanyi soldiers liberated the country, putting an end to the Genocide against Tutsi.

To achieve continued success, the youth are urged to embrace discipline, commitment and exemplary leadership, as well as reflecting on the remarkable journey of Rwanda and the extraordinary individuals who have shaped its history.

Rwandans pay tribute to those heroes who, through their courage and selflessness, have paved the way for today’s Rwanda.

Late Maj Gen Fed Rwigema, at the age of 33, left his comfortable position as Vice Minister of Defence in Uganda, along with other young Inkotanyi soldiers and started the struggle, which liberated Rwanda.

Despite having everything in Uganda, they recognized the need to address poor leadership in Rwanda, which was turning away refugees and causing suffering among the population.

Mutara III Rudahigwa envisioned an independent Rwanda and fought against colonization and the divisive influence of the Catholic Church. He fostered unity among Rwandans until his mysterious death.

Michel Rwagasana, despite being a cousin to President Gregoire Kayibanda, sided with the cause of uniting Rwandans, departing from his cousin's party, PARMEHUTU, which promoted genocide ideology.

Sister Felicite Niyitegeka, the sister of Col Leonard Nkundiye under genocidal government, who served as the Commander of Bigogwe during the Genocide against the Tutsi, demonstrated extraordinary courage by choosing to protect and stand with the Tutsi people, even at the cost of her own life.

Despite Col Nkundiye's plea to separate from the endangered group, Sister Niyitegeka steadfastly replied that if her brother wished to save her life, he should do so alongside the Tutsi whom she was protecting.

Tragically, Sister Niyitegeka was killed alongside the very people she bravely shielded. Her selfless sacrifice and unwavering commitment will forever be remembered and cherished.

The students of Nyange defiantly asserted their Rwandan identity amidst the ethnic divisions prevalent during that time.

Rwanda’s heroes were not just figures of the past. They were individuals who believed in the power of change and dared to dream of a better future. Rwandans stand on the shoulders of those who faced adversity with unwavering determination, sacrificed for the collective good and demonstrated resilience in the face of challenges.

The responsibility now falls on the shoulders of Rwandan youth, who are growing under favourable conditions in various life sectors. In the realm of security, many young officers born after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi are taking over from their predecessors and parents who sacrificed everything to halt the genocide and liberate the country.

The youth should draw lessons from national heroes and let their stories inspire positive change.

Rwandan youth should recognize that they are the architects of tomorrow. They are urged to seize every opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to Rwanda's development.

Embracing education, innovation, and community service is essential. In the face of challenges, resilience is key, as overcoming adversity reveals true strength.

Let us collaborate in building a Rwanda where every individual, regardless of background, has the chance to thrive. The aspirations of Rwandan youth, combined with the spirit of our heroes, can pave the way for a future where unity and progress go hand in hand.
